The use of imagery and figurative language in Shakespeare’s sonnet â€Å"Shall I compare Thee to a summer’s Day and Owen’s war poem â€Å"Dulce et Decorum Est.† The poems â€Å"Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day, by William Shakespeare’s and Dulce et Decorum â€Å" by Owen’s are two poems in which their poets makes extensive use of imagery and figurative language. By definition, an imagery is a word or phrase that describes senses (feel, hear, smell, taste and sight), while a figurative language which include devices such as metaphor, symbols, personification, alliteration and similes are used in poems to help the speakers convey their ideas and to help their readers access these ideas. The writers of both poems uses this technique differently in other to helps readers to understand what was going on. In Shakespeare’s poem, â€Å"Shall I Compare Thee to a summer’s Day.† the poem is a fourteen line sonnet, written about the beauty of the speaker beloved. Shakespeare’s uses different literary techniques in order to enable readers to be able to picture a vivid image of the woman being talked about. As a teacher however, it brings challenges to engage and maintain a student’s learning in the classroom environment. Mothers may often be misunderstood but it does not mean that they do not know better. My earliest memory of my mother is that of a very pretty face. For me she was the most beautiful woman alive and nothing compares with her. When those green eyes do start to squint, it means I have done something wrong. Even if I was born six years after my brother, this never prompted her to play favorites. But rather, she made it a point to be fair and equal among all her children. Whenever I commit a mistake, Mom would not hesitate to point it out to me, punish me if needed. Sometimes, I detested it but over time I came to realize that Mom did that because she only has the best interest at heart. However, she was not one to hold grudges for long. Like most mothers, my mother is very protective of me that often times I resented her for being so. I did not understand why she has to constantly ask about my whereabouts who I am going with and where I was going. It never occurred to me that this was an essential part of being a mother. A mother cares and worries for her children. Mother taught me that getting reprimanded does not mean that she loves me less. On the contrary, she showed me that when she scolds me, it means that she cares for me and worries about me. Mother has certainly her own flaws but I have come to accept, in fact love every bit of them. When mom starts to call or page me non-stop, it is either she misses me or she needs something or I have irked her again. Some may call it nagging, I call it loving. For a person to wear her heart on her sleeves is a vulnerable thing, but mother is not all vulnerable. In fact she is very strong. She never backs off in a fight especially if she knows she is right but she also knows how to compromise too. But compromising for her does not mean that you are wrong. Comprising is just another way of getting things done later. When I started school, mom was my ally. To me, school was a world were ghosts and bad guys lurk. Instead of laughing at my fears, mom showed me instead how great school can be. On my first day of school, she prepared my favorite snacks drove me school. Kansas City was a place where Dorothy overcame many different obstacles that played in her mind and led her to fantasizing about a place ?somewhere over the rainbow way up high?. This utopia takes away all of life's dilemmas and flawlessness and replaces your soul with many hopes, dreams and happiness galore. Meandering down the yellow brick road, Dorothy comes across three imaginary beings that help her along the way on her adventure of going back home. She is given intelligence for using her ruby slippers to keep evil powers away, sensitivity of the heart and courage to carry on and defeat the evil witch of the west. ...I have no brains at all. The scarecrow was the first encounter that Dorothy made on her journey to see the wizard so that he could get her home. Although he said time after time that he did not have a brain and could not think for himself, the scarecrow did a very good job of aiding Dorothy to Emerald City. He thought up a way of tricking the trees so that Dorothy and he would have some apples to eat because they were starving. Scarecrow believed that the wonderful wizard of Oz would be able to give him a brain so he could use endlessly and be as smart like the others. The identity of the scarecrow is the character Hunk in Dorothy's realistic life. It is shown that Dorothy keeps the people who are close to her in mind when she drifts off into Wonderland.
